Ice Age 3: Age of Dinosaurs

Simply the most beautiful animation film i have seen in recent times. It is a story about a group of animals living in ice age. An elephant couple is about to give birth to a baby elephant. The other animals see it as the moment to departure for them. A growing tiger eager to catch up some adventure in his ending life. Sid looking for new friends. And ‘The Buck’ fearless in age of dinosaurs settling even with Rudy the giant white dinosaur.

I have to say this that the director, writer and other artist who worked in animation film are brilliant people. They have brought the common life so easily through these mammals on a 3D screen. The eyes of these mammals look as alive as of a real living creature.
The Buck is the most interesting character in the film. He is adventurous, courageous, xenophilic, and revengeful towards Rudy. Why did Buck take the mammals to the darker area of dinosaurs world? Certainly not for saving Sid. Is it for adventure? Is it for revenge? He may live in a hostile animal world but he is one of those outlawed who belong to Ice Age.

Ghajini is the Bollywood version of Memento. Amir Khan plays Sanjay Singhania who is a rich entrepreneur who comes to India with a dream to make himself as the cellular baron of India. Here he met a young vibrant girl named Kalpana, played by Asin. Kalpana unknowingly fumes the story that she is the gal friend of Sanjay Singhania. This is how this Bollywood story starts. Ghajini a criminal socialite kills Kalpana and cripples Sanjay of short term memory loss. The movie revolves around how Sanjay Singhania takes revenge of his gal friend’s murder helped by a young medical student Sunita.

Amir Khan once again did an excellent job. He worked really hard to shape himself up to become macho man. The Bollywood newcomer Asin also did perfect job by bringing mirth and love to the story. The story is very sound in both scientific sense and keeping the Bollywood factor of super powerful protagonist. Overall movie is a good entertainer with good songs.

3 Idiots

3 Idiots is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five point someone. It’s a movie about three friends who meet at an elite Delhi engineering college. The movie is an invigorating account of Indian college life. Farhan Qureshi played by Madhavan, belongs to a middle class family, who wants to be a wildlife photographer but ends up becoming an engineer. Another tragedy is Raju Rastogi played by Sharman Joshi. He is from a poor family of teacher mother, postmaster paralyzed father and an unmarried young sister. He lives his life full of fear of failing. Rancho or Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad, the main protagonist of the 3 Idiots. He is lively, fearless and innovative lad who just wants to learn. The story is how these young men pave their way under Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe popularly known as VIRUS. The Professor is a very intelligent but hard to go along with personality and mentor. The Bollywood factor is provided by Karina Kapoor.

The film is full of real day to day life comedy. Hirani kept enough comedy to make you sit for three hours. Sharman Joshi gives another excellent performance. He is coming out as the best supporting actor with several good comic roles. Amir Khan like always did a great job.

The novels on which movies are based are always superior than latter. Five point someone is an excellent novel written in very basic language. The three protagonist of Chetan Bhagat are amoral. They live as they like. They do not dictate or preach. That is the liveliness of Five point someone. The film severely failed in portraying the essence of Five point someone. Two thing that is way above my understanding are who can give birth to a baby using a vacuum cleaner and who can patent 400 innovation in 5 years.

The Avatar is about clash of two races. The human race which is hungry for power and an alien race mesmerized in jungle. The natives Navi are the aliens living in another planetary system. The humans want to colonize their home for extraction of precious energy rich mineral. A marine accompanied by a Navi loving explorer scientist is sent to the Pandora jungles to diplomatize the natives. The mysterious jungle rather untrained the marine.
James Francis Cameron, the legendary director/producer of long and big budget movies, did a really good job. Making viewers sit for 3 long hours without whining is indeed a good job. I do not think that the film will change the film technology or the way we perceive films. The film has excellent animation and a thin story line. Anything related to computers can’t be marked as a milestone as according to Moore’s law the computer technology will double its capabilities every two years. That means we are going to see many more excellent animation in near future.
One thing that attracted me most was the thought that the whole Pandora is connected to each other, animals, trees, Navi people, ancestor’s voices, etc. This is a very mature thought and is very true even on our mother Earth. Everything is indeed connected, all you need is ears and openness.

District 9

District 9 is one of the best original story in recent times. I must confess that District 9 has its own goose bumps moments. District 9 has an excellent direction by Neill Blomkamp in the form of mock documentary. A good film is one which does not try to explain things but the one which entangles the loose treads. District 9, along with Wall-E, are the best alien films in this decade.
District 9 instigate several questions. The most important one is what is wrong with human race. The educated one wants to earn money by any means. The military knows only to kill. The fear of unexpected, exclusion and inhumane nature towards other living beings, interracial prostitution and superstition as in flesh eating. District 9 is inherently mingled with the African story of brutality.
Ironically, this time the UFO did not land on American soil.

The Watchmen

It’s all joke. Watchmen is one of the most thought provoking graphic novel of our time. Words will not cease, thoughts catch fire. I am more bound to write about the graphic novel than the movie. The movie makes more sense, if you took pain of reading the graphic novel.

The Watchmen is about a group of superheros crafted by legendary writer of the ‘V for Vendetta’ Alan Moore. Being a superhero is so often associated with morality. Alan Moore breaks the chain of morality. The masked men are no longer moral that is why people are asking who watches the Watchmen.

Doc Manhattan, a physicist, whose body withered away in quantum space and the intangible matter comes back. He is blue in color. What does it signify? May be just a color. He is all about knowledge. “Why should I save this world which I no longer have a any stake.”,Doc

Rorschach, my favorite vigilante, who never compromised. Son of a poor mother who grew up hating crime and lived hating it hardly. “You don’t understand, I am not locked here with you, you are locked here with me.”, Rorschach.

Danny boy never forgot that he is no longer a vigilante. Along with Silk Spectre II he rejoins the league of the Watchmen. He Owes his name to his superhero the Nite Owl I. “We used to be a good team. What happened?”,Nite Owl II.

Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias considers himself of the category of the ancient Pharaohs. He is the smartest man on the planet Earth. He is the savior of the world. “Statistically one incident does not mean trend”,Ozymandias.

The Comedian was the beginning, the comedian is the end beacause it’s all joke. If you can see it will all be a joke for your. “Just a matter of time, I suppose.”,The Comedian. SK

Kaminey by AS

A typical Vishal Bharadwaj film, loaded with social messages, political situations which are tied with entertainment. He picked up a few same old ideas and mixed them with recent events to give it a new look. The old ghisa-pita concept of boy meets girl, falls in love, family disagrees- got new face when linked with Maharashtrian and north Indian issue.
It really got support of good acting delivered by Priyanka and Shahid. Shahid seemed to be under pressure all throughout the film, maybe its because he got maximum footage and was trying hard to make both his characters differ from each-other. Priyanka got a strong role who thinks for herself and takes her decision, not very common in Indian films.
Climax was full of blood, bullets and boredom. Knowing Vishal’s capabilities, he Could have done a better job. Songs were decent, one cute and fun number, one song dedicated to social cause of contraception, heavy background score. Costumes were good, priyanka really did look a local Maharashtrian girl with her kurtas and cotton suits. Shahid also looked “chapri” with his kind of ragged t shirts and nylon shirts. Cinematography was commendable. Vishal did a good job in creating a mood of film but still something is missing.AS

Kaminey is a film about two brothers making their way in chaotic Mumbai. Vishal Bharadwaj presents another dark, rather, not so dark drama, but if you call crime and sadism dark then may be its even darker. The film has everything a typical Bollywood film would have. Politicians, cops, criminals, etc. not to mention all are corrupt. The Bollywood is also incomplete without a love story, so, Kaminey has a love story of bubbly Mumbai next door girl Priyanka Chopra as Sweety and supposedly immigrant Shahid Kapoor or Guddu. Guddu’s twin brother Charlie is a horse racing bookie. Rest of the movie is all regular action. A part of the movie is likable but over all film does not deserve appreciation.

Vishal Bharadwaj had made some revolutionary films like Omkara, Makabul, etc. The best thing about those films is that they are though based on Shakespearean tragedy but they are very beautifully represented in Indian drama. I like the way of tragedy, Vishal Bharadwaj shows in his films. It is very similar, in a sense, to the beauty of action in Tarantino’s films. The story of the film is ugly as it ends in a happy bollywood ending. Shahid did a good job, though Omkara and Makabul lacked the glamor, I guess some roles need no glamor. Kaminey has nothing new to show.SK

Lord of War

It is a little late to write a review on a movie which was released in year 2005. Better late than never. Nicholas Cage is famous for his action packed entertaining movies. The Lord of War breaks the stereotype of entertainment and steps into the realms of social cause. The movie has several eye opening issues. The central theme of the movie is who is threat to whom. The five permanent member of United Nations Security Council or the dictators from middle east or the Africa. This movie is a part of a series which is exemplified by Hotel Rwanda, The Last King of Scotland, etc.
Nicholas Cage plays the role of Yuri Orlov, an immigrant who came from hell to hell, an arms dealer. Everybody has a talent said Yuri Orlov. He found talent in selling arms. Yuri takes help of many of his friends and family for setting up his empire, like his brother Vitaly Orlov (Jaret Leto), his uncle Gen. Dmitri Orlov (Yevgeni Lazarev) and his Jewish connections. The role of Yuri’s wife is played by Bridget Moynahan as Ava Fontaine Orlov. He has full support from corrupt government officials and military generals. He is accompanied by his brother Vitaly across the world from Middle East to the Africa. If there is a mouse there have to be a cat. The cat is interpol officer Ethan Hawke, as Jack Valentine, who chases Yuri throughout the world. The story takes a turn when he meets an African dictator, the President of Liberia, André Baptiste Sr.(Eamonn Walker) and his crazy Rambo loving son André Baptiste Jr.(Sammi Rotibi) . One of the few lessons that this fast paced movie gives is never engage. The rule to success is ‘never engage’. Yuri showed no sign of morality in his business. Is there a morality? He just sold the guns.SK
